FOR PARENTS & GUARDIANS

Just like adults, young people need to feel connected and supported by their social networks and larger community.

Multiple years of the Youth Well-Being Survey and other youth data collection efforts in Boise and beyond have shown that local young people lack connection information, skills, and opportunities. Get Out There is meant to help address these issues, but there are also many ways adults can help support youth social connection.

HOW CAN PARENTS & GUARDIANS HELP SUPPORT TEEN SOCIAL CONNECTION?

  • Don't dismiss teen social needs as unnecessary or unimportant.

  • Say "yes" (when you can) to your teen's in-person hang outs and chill time with friends.

  • Offer up a ride (car pools are also great) or help your teen with planning a bus, bike, or walking route that helps them and their friends explore what their community offers.

  • Let your teen bring a friend along the next time you're trying something new.

  • Model the importance of social connection for your teen or teens. Invite friends over/do activities with others regularly.
